Essence, Triviality, and Fundamentality

چکیده
Abstract I defend a new account of constitutive essence on which an entity’s constitutively essential properties are its most fundamental, nontrivial necessary properties. argue that this accommodates the Finean counterexamples to classic modalism about essence, provides independently plausible and does not run into clear counterexamples. conclude theory promising way forward for attempts produce adequate nonprimitivist, modalist essence. As both triviality fundamentality in understood terms grounding, also potentially has important implications relation between grounding.

Essence Without Fundamentality
In Modality and Explanatory Reasoning, Boris Kment argues that a single notion of essence can be used to play two different theoretical roles. He thinks there is an important connection between essence and metaphysical necessity, on the one hand, and between essence and metaphysical explanation, on the other. It seems to me that there is a price to be paid for using a single notion of essence t...
متن کاملTwo Conceptions of Fundamentality
This article aims to show that fundamentality is construed differently in the two most prominent strategies of analysis we find in physical science and engineering today: (1) atomistic, reductive analysis and (2) Systems analysis. Correspondingly, atomism is the conception according to which the simplest (smallest) indivisible entity of a certain kind is most fundamental; while systemism, as wi...
متن کاملFundamentality of Ridge Functions
For a given integer d, 1 ≤ d ≤ n − 1, let Ω be a subset of the set of all d × n real matrices. Define the subspace M(Ω) = span{g(Ax) : A ∈ Ω, g ∈ C(IR, IR)} . We give necessary and sufficient conditions on Ω so that M(Ω) is dense in C(IR, IR) in the topology of uniform convergence on compact subsets. This generalizes work of Vostrecov and Kreines. We also consider some related problems. §
متن کاملOn the Fundamentality of Symmetries
That symmetry is fundamental to modern physics is a view frequently expressed by physicists. In his popular expositions Steven Weinberg, for example, has aimed above all to communicate his conviction that ‘symmetries are fundamental, and possibly all that one needs to learn about the physical world beyond quantum mechanics itself’.1 His fellow particle physicist Abdus Salam has argued similarly...
متن کاملSchnorr triviality and genericity
We study the connection between Schnorr triviality and genericity. We show that while no 2-generic is Turing equivalent to a Schnorr trivial and no 1-generic is tt-equivalent to a Schnorr trivial, there is a 1-generic that is Turing equivalent to a Schnorr trivial. However, every such 1-generic must be high. As a corollary, we prove that not all K-trivials are Schnorr trivial. We also use these...
